How to start off with a new team?

- Build a relationship with each team member, get to know them, and get them to know you. So we understand each other, and how we think.
- Let that sit for a bit, while the team member validates your actions. Do you do what you say?
- Set the expectations, and lay down goals.
- Make sure they understand that you are there to help them achieve what they want.
- Make sure that you provide value to their work. At the end, if you have to leave, you will be missed.

Executive Interview

Arrange employee meeting with senior management to provide an avenue for them to get to know each other, and for the employee to more directly express himself, e.g. improvement to the organization and product.

Why does my team exist?

Today in the QA Vision meeting, I learned the lesson on how to give a team a purpose, so they can come together to achieve it.

We need to define goals, ways to achieve them (how), and ways to measure the success.

Managing a team

Here are a few things I would like to accomplish with my team:

  • Communicate often and clearly, especially team goals, project goals, etc.
  • Determine the focus of the team, and set the appropriate expectations.
  • Get to know each team member:
    • Career aspiration (short and long term goals)
    • What he/she enjoys working
    • Strength and weakness
    • Listen to their suggestions about the improvement to the product/team/organization/company.
  • Create an enjoyable working environment for the team.
  • Assist the team to achieve maximum productivity while maintaining work/life balance.
  • Lead by example.
